Electric fence equipment – insulators
The insulator’s primary role is to securely hold the fence line without power leaking to the post and then to the ground. A well designed insulator will hold the line securely so that it does not wear the tape, rope or wire when buffeted around by the elements. It will also allow the line to freely pass through without the impedance of sharp edges.
Corner insulators and end tensioners are designed to take the strain of a tensioned fence line through changes of direction and at the end of the fence line. Using a wooden post with this type of insulator in a temporary fence line enables the effective tensioning of the line, and allows temporary plastic posts to be spaced at greater distances extending the life of the tape or wire.
Off-set insulators hold the line away from the post giving extra clearance from hedges and walls. If installing on a stock fence, it also provides additional insurance from rubbing and chewing or from potential arcing problems. Off-sets are ideal to use within a predator fence. Installed at the base of a poultry run, it provides a ‘scare’ wire for the incoming predator or can be carefully placed to catch the sensitive ears of burrowing pests. This type of insulator can be positioned at every other post as it is less likely to make contact with intervening posts.
