Posts, wire and netting

All of the timber supplied and installed in a fence by Suddenstrike Fencing is sourced from FSC managed sustainable environments.
Posts and timberwork
A fence is only as good as the posts that support it – the life span of the fence and its strength is all down to the correct choice of materials for the job. Ideally any timber that comes in contact with the ground needs to have the very best form of treatment available to prolong the life of the fence, whereas rails that don’t come in to contact with the ground do not need the same level of treatment.
We supply and install fence posts in all sizes with varying degrees of treatment suitable for all budgets, below are some of the timber treatments available.
Standard celucure treated posts
These are the standard posts used in our installations (unless specified otherwise). The timber that we use is whitewood and it is dried and then pressure treated in accordance with European regulations and guidelines.
User Class 4 specification pressure treated posts
Also known as UC4 (User Class 4). The timber we use is redwood and is kiln dried to a moisture content of less than 28 per cent, then pressure treated in accordance with European regulations and guidelines and is guaranteed to BS8417.
This form of treatment should provide a desired life span of 15 years (in standard conditions) in line with British Standard specifications.
User Class 4 specification incised treated posts
These posts are pressure treated as above, but also contain incisions above and below the section of the post that will be at or below ground level.
This allows the wood preservative to penetrate deeper in to the post to offer a more protective barrier at the critical decay zone (the area just above and just below ground level).
This form of treatment should provide a desired life span of 15 years (in standard conditions).
Creosoted pressure treated posts
Again the timber is selected from suitable redwood and dried to a moisture content of less than 28 per cent, then pressure treated with creosote. This is the more traditional process for treating timber and is favourable amongst equestrian establishments where horses are less likely to chew the timber.
The life expectancy of these posts can be in excess of 15 years (in standard conditions).
*When specifying creosote treatments beware of cheaper products which may use whitewood and will not offer the same life span as redwood.
Sector Class 4 specification posts
Sector Class 4 posts are typically redwood posts that are treated to give a desired expected life service of 30 years. This standard of treatment is available in both creosoted and pressure treaments. Creosoted treated posts will comply with BS EN 13991, with penetration and retention levels in accordance with the relevant provisions of BS 8417. Pressure treated posts will be in accordance with the requirements to meet the standards set by BS 8417 (30 year specification).
SC4 treated posts are a more expensive option, but their 30 year desired service life means that they will last a lot longer than standard pressure or creosote treated posts
English coppiced woodlands provide an annual source of fencing timbers. Chestnut coppiced in the winter gives the longest service life, ideally sitting for a year and then dipped in tar or treated. This type of timber offers a more rustic effect and is available in quarters, halves and full rounds mixed and can be either sawn or cleft. When the timber is cleft the cuts follow the grain of the timber, whereas when sawn it is generally cut straight. Sawn timber may be more susceptible to splitting than cleft timber.
The service life of chestnut timber should give in excess of 15 years.
All of our timber, regardless of the species or type of treatment offered, is sourced from FSC approved managed woodlands. FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) woodlands are managed and re-stocked to form a sustainable source. Proof of FSC and treatment documentation is available on request.
Wire, mesh and netting
Through our network of quality suppliers, we are able to offer an extensive range of wire, mesh and netting to suit all requirements and budgets.
When installing a fence we offer five grades of wire, all wire is manufactured to BSEN10223 or higher and is available galvanised to BSEN10244.
|L – This is a light gauge wire consisting of 2.5mm top and bottom lines and 2.0mm infill lines. This wire is used mainly for temporary fence lines as well as along pipelines and hedgerows.|
C – C is a medium gauge wire and is composed of 3.15mm top and bottom lines and then 2.5mm infill lines. The medium gauge wire is a popular all round stock fence wire.
B – A heavy gauge wire with 4.0mm top and bottom lines with 3.15mm infill lines. A longer lasting wire, B gauge wire is mainly seen alongside highways and coastal areas.
LHT – LHT is a light high tensile wire and is available with various gauge sizes for the top, bottom and infill lines to suit varying requirements such as poultry fencing or deer fencing.
HT – HT is comprised of high tensile wires at 2.5mm throughout the fence (top, bottom and infill lines). HT netting is the standard netting used in all of our fences, unless specified otherwise, and is a great all round wire for use in stock netting, equine fencing, deer fencing, sheep netting and is available in lamb, pheasant/game bird friendly options.
Exclusively from X™Fence®, X gauge netting is available in two forms XLHT and XHT and is manufactured using an X™ knot and single strand vertical wires, giving the fence superior strength and durability. X™Fence® mesh is available for a variety of uses such as equine, poultry, livestock, deer, security and civils as well as for the exclusion of otters, badgers and boar. Bespoke options are also available.
Exclusively from Tornado Wire, titan netting is manufactured using a titan knot which provides the netting with superior impact resistance. The knot is constructed from a single strand of wire, whilst the horizontal and vertical wires are single continuous strands.
Exclusively from Tornado Wire, the torus knot is manufactured with a high pressure bonded, smooth knot and continuous vertical stay wire.
This is the traditional join for wire. It is cost effective and enables the netting to be turned out or cranked for use in special applications.
